Asian Style Gobi fried rice – Manchurian rice

Gobi fried rice is an Indian style cauliflower Chinese fried rice recipe. The Indian version of Chinese food is called Indo-Chinese food. In Hindi cauliflower is gobi. Gobi Manchurian is an Indo-Chinese dish which was developed by a Chinese person in India. So may not find Manchurian in China. It is one of the most loved Indo-Chinese street food in India. You will see the Manchurian food stall in every corner of India. So Coming to today’s recipe, gobi fried rice is a mixture of gobi Manchurian and fried rice.

I first tasted the gobi fried rice in my office canteen. They use to serve the gobi fried rice with potato chips and, tomato ketchup.
The flavor is addictive, so I tried the recipe at home, and everybody at home approved the recipe.

Ingredients:

Gobi fry:

  • 400 – grams cauliflower florets, small pieces
  • oil for deep fry

For batter:

  • 1/2 cup of cornflour
  • 1/2 tsp of Kashmiri red chili powder
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp of red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp of homemade garam masala
  • 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • about half a cup of water
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • 1 tsp of garlic paste

fried rice:

  • 1/4 cup of sesame oil(Chinese sesame oil)
  • 1/4 cup of green onion(white part)- chopped
  • 2 – green chili-chopped
  • 1/2 cup of onion chopped
  • 1/4 cup of green part of green onion- chopped
  • half green bell peppers- sliced
  • 1/2 cup – cabbage – sliced
  • 1 cup of raw basmati rice- pre-cooked
  • deep-fried gobi
  • 1.5 tsp of salt
  • 1/2 tsp of red chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp of garam masala

garam Masala powder

  • 1/4 tsp of white pepper powder

Sauces:

  • 3 tbsp of soy sauce(low sodium)
  • 3 tsp of rice vinegar(sugar-free)
  • 2 tsp red chili sauce(I use Maggi brand)
  • 2 tsp of tomato sauce

Procedure :

Step 1: gobi fry

  1. In a pot, add required water and bring to boil. When the water boils, add the cauliflower florets and let it cook for 2 minutes.
  2. Two minutes later, turn off the stove and remove the cauliflower floret then, discard the water.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the ingredients for batter. The consistency of the batter should be like idli batter or pancake batter.
  4. In a frying pan heat the required oil for deep fry.
  5. Take 5 to 6 cauliflower florets and drop it into the batter. Coat the cauliflower with batter and drop into the hot oil. Let the cauliflowers fry until crisp and well cooked. Once in a while, turn the cauliflowers.
  6. Remove the crispy cauliflowers from the oil and keep it aside.

Step 2: Gobi Fried rice

  1. In a wide-based pan, heat the required sesame oil and fry the green chilis, onion, shallots(white part) until translucent followed by ginger and garlic paste for about 2 minutes or so.
  2. Make sure raw smell of ginger and garlic is gone then, stir the cabbage and green peppers until soft. 
  3. Season the veggies with spice powders(1 tsp chili powder, 1/4 tsp garam masala,1/4 tsp white pepper powder) and salt. Mix the spices for a second. 
  4. Add in the sauces and mix well for a second then, add the fried gobi(deep-fried cauliflower) and mix well.
  5. Finally, add the pre-cooked basmati rice and green onion(green part), mix well to coat each grain of rice in sauces and spice and, Turn off the stove. Gobi fried rice is ready.

Serve the gobi fried rice with fish fry or baby corn pepper fry or mushroom pepper fry or potato chips.
